“To all who come to this happy place – welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America… with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world. Thank you.” – Walt Disney
The Happiest Place on Earth is turning 58. I think it is safe to say, it looks good for its age ;).
On this day in 1955, Disneyland opened its doors for the first time. It is the only Disney park designed and built under direct supervision of Walt Disney himself. After visiting various theme parks with his daughters, Walt came up with the idea to build a theme park where adults and children can have fun together. The original park included Main Street, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland. Let’s take a look at the opening day attractions that are still in operation:
- Disneyland Band
- Disneyland Railroad Main Street Station
- Disneyland Railroad Mickey’s Toontown
- Disneyland Railroad New Orleans Square Station
- Disneyland Railroad Tomorrowland Station
- Dumbo the Flying Elephant
- Jungle Cruise
- King Arthur Carrousel
- Mad Tea Party
- Main Street Cinema
- Mark Twain Riverboat
- Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride
- Peter Pan’s Flight
- Snow White’s Scary Adventures
- Storybook Land Canal Boats
Even though the opening days generated some negative publicity (inoperable drink fountains, despite very high temperatures), as we can say of today, his vision came true. Not only children’s eyes light up when crossing the gate to the Happiest Place on Earth.
Let’s have peek at what Disneyland has looked like in 1955:
What better way to celebrate this anniversary, than go on a ride on one of the opening day attractions? What is your favorite ride?
